Explore Your Neighborhood - Fall Edition

Last week, we had the official start to fall, but right now in Georgia, it still feels like we're in the middle of summer.

But not to worry, as the days get shorter, the nights will get colder, and many activities synonymous with the fall season have already begun. There's plenty to do right here in the metro this fall, and just a few miles out from the perimeter, there is even more fall fun to be had!

Check out our suggestions of ways to explore your neighborhood this fall:

Step right up, it's fair season!

Fall time means fair time, and there are plenty of local and statewide fairs and festivals happening all around the state.
Right here in Marietta is the North Georgia State Fair. With carnival rides, daily performances, a petting zoo and a blue-ribbon contest, there is plenty to do for the whole family. The sea lion show and pig races return as fair-goer favorites, and new this year includes an alligator show and fireman high diving act. And don't forget about the funnel cakes! There are plenty of delicious carts and food trucks with sweet treats and fair delicacies. Don't wait too long though, this is the last week for this fair, located at Jim R. Miller Park.
If you can't make the fair this weekend, not to worry. The Georgia National Fair will be held in Perry, GA from October 5th to 15th. With more rides, games, and food vendors than you can imagine, there are also livestock competitions and other specialty shows.
The Georgia State Fair will start this Friday and run until October 8 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.

North Georgia Apple Festival

It may be a bit of a drive, but it's worth it for fresh, right-of-the-tree apples from North Georgia.
This is the 46th year of the Ellijay Apple Festival, and there's reason for it's success. Located just a few minutes from more than 10 apple orchards, the festival features over 200 vendors selling arts and crafts, foods, and other specialty items. The festival will be held the weekends of October 14th and 15th and 21st and 22nd. An antique car show will be held on October 14th and the parade will take place on the 21st.
Many of the surrounding apple orchards are open during the week and on weekends through November. You can walk through the trees and pick your own apples, or take the easy way out and grab a bag that's already picked. Some orchards have their own petting zoo and performances, and don't forget to try some apple cider and fried pies!

Pumpkin Patch Picking

It may be a little early to start thinking about jack-o'-lanterns, but visiting a pumpkin patch is a fun fall activity and they can be great decorations (or pie of course)!
There are plenty of patches around the metro and beyond with pumpkins, and some have corn mazes and hay rides as well.
In Dawsonville, not far from Ellijay, is Burt's Farm and pumpkin patch. There are all kinds of pumpkins to be found here - flat, round, small, short, and even ones so large you'll need a wheelbarrow to get it off the ground. The farm also offers hayrides and has a country store with fall decorations including gourds and Indian corn.
Also in Dawsonville is Uncle Shuck's pumpkin patch and corn maze. Each year the corn maze is cut in a different design, and this year features some Georgia wildlife. In addition to the corn maze, there are pick-your-own-pumpkins, a corn cannon and a goat walk, as well as festival food and hayrides.
In Woodstock, there is Berry Patch Farm , a patch that opens this weekend, and often, local organizations will host pumpkin patches - so be sure to check with your county and city to see what's happening in your neighborhood!

Haunted Happenings

Halloween is quickly approaching, and there are plenty of spook-tacular events to give you a fright if you dare to enter.
Of course, one of the biggest Halloween attractions in Atlanta is Netherworld. A walk-through haunted house, Netherworld is known throughout the scare industry for it's high-quality special effects, impressive makeup, and talented (and frightening) actors. There are two houses for guests to enter, and this year's haunts will feature Primal Scream and Mr. Grendel's 3D Funhouse of Horrors.
For frights and heights, visit Six Flags Over Georgia for Fright Fest. Zombies and ghouls take over the park at night, and several haunted houses and scare zones are placed throughout the park. Rides will also be open during the fest that runs until October 31st.
If you're looking for some less frightening Halloween fun, Little Five Points hosts a Halloween festival and parade on the 21st, and Oakland Cemetery keeps its gates open after dark around Halloween.

So if it's fall fun or terrifying frights you're searching for this fall metro-Atlanta and the State of Georgia has you covered. Check here for a list of other fall festivals coming to the city in October, and be sure to check with your local city and county for other fall activities in your neighborhood!
